STROKE RATE L.M. Somerton 63

Ben sighed, but in a halting voice told Lucien everything. He left nothing out. When

he’d finished Lucien’s soft blue eyes had darkened to the colour of flint, his expression brittle with fury.

“Explain to me why you didn’t ring me immediately, Benedict.”

Ben cast his eyes down. “I didn’t want to bother you at work. He was gone and I was

okay.”

His hands were shaking. Lucien spotted them and seemed immediately contrite. He

lifted Ben’s head with a finger under his chin. “I’m sorry. I’m mad at Seb—I shouldn’t be taking it out on you.” The kiss that followed was hard and reproving. “That doesn’t mean that I won’t be punishing you a little later.”

Ben flushed and gave a shy smile. “Just a little?”

Lucien shook his head and rolled his eyes. “I was going to suggest we go out to eat, but I don’t want to be accused of slapping you around. Do you have anything edible in the

place?”

“Eggs, cheese… I make a really good omelette.”

“Perfect. Dealing with Seb can wait until tomorrow. I don’t know what’s going on in his

head, but he is seriously screwed.”

Ben cracked eggs into a bowl and whisked. “This place isn’t much, Lucien, but I need it

and my job.”

“I’m a lawyer, Ben. There are plenty of ways of dealing with scum like Seb that don’t

involve physical violence, tempting though that would be.”

Ben stirred grated cheese, chopped chives into the beaten egg and poured the mixture

into a hot pan.

“He’s never been so…direct before. He’s always been a bully, but I never dreamt he

would do something like this.”

After a couple of minutes, he cut the omelette in half and slid the pieces onto two plates.

“I think there’s something else going on with him.”

Lucien paused, a forkful of food halfway to his mouth. “You amaze me. After what he

did to you, you should be cursing his name, not analysing his motivation.”

“Maybe I just hope that there’s a shred of good in everyone.”

Lucien raised a dark eyebrow. “Does that include me?”

“There’s no hope for you.” Ben hid his smile just a little too late.
